Gouache on Paper

If you were to read all of the tiny text in this drawing you would learn about El Fadel's mother, who though she lived safely in the U.S., still feared the Janjaweed...in Portland, Maine! He describes how she would not allow the lights in their apartment to be turned off at night, would stay up all night on watch while her adult children slept. She also kept a knapsack by the door with some essentials always packed inside in case they needed to flee suddenly. Where they would run to El Fadel did not know, but he knew that she imagined that she could run into a forest and climb a tree, as he had done many years ago.
